Guardiola has been deeply wedded to a 4-3-3 which strikes the perfect balance between defensive solidity and attacking fluidity. At times, the Catalan coach has not been averse to deploying a 4-2-3-1 with a double-midfield pivot screening the backline, but given BVB’s defensive vulnerabilities — noticeably conceding four to Sevilla in the previous round — he may be tempted to stick with a 4-3-3 and put pressure on Terzic’s backline.

Dortmund’s undoubted Achilles’ heel this season has been their porous backline, but Terzic has proven a man of habit and is unlikely to revert to a more pragmatic back-three, as the club started the campaign with under Lucien Favre; instead, he may stick to a 4-2-3-1, so as to not hinder their own attacking potential.
